Competency Based Assessments

Competency-based assessment is a psychometric approach assessing an individual’s inherent and developed competency, existing knowledge, skills, and abilities based on specific key responsible areas required to perform a particular job or role. It focuses on evaluating an individual’s abilities against established performance criteria and standards.

This approach to assessment aims to provide a fair and objective tangible evaluation of an individual’s capabilities and to identify areas for improvement or further development. The assessment criteria are typically developed from a thorough job analysis, which identifies the key competencies required for success in a particular role.

Competencies may include technical skills, as well as essential soft skills. Competency-based assessments typically involve multiple methods of evaluation, such as written tests, observations, simulations, and feedback from supervisors and peers. The results of the assessment can be used to identify individual strengths and weaknesses and to guide development plans, training needs, and career progression.

At UBL we recommend doing a competency-based assessment as it provides a structured and objective approach to evaluating an individual’s abilities, supporting fairness, and transparency in the assessment process. The various methods and techniques used for assessment provide a comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s competencies, allowing assessors to make informed judgments about their abilities and development needs.

We encourage and propel strength-based assessment and appreciative inquiry for an optimistic approach to map competencies and develop individual’s learning curve.
